Best of 2024

Welcome to my EOTY list, I hope you find something to sink yr teeth into or something maybe you hadn't heard or something you've seen hyped up, avoided and this makes you finally take a dive.

Tile - Warmfth

Well, one of the best records you'll hear this year is from a under known band from Indianapolis. The merging of long form drones of Windy & Carl, Azusa Plane and downtempo beats of Lamb or Bowery Electric. Each side is one long piece that builds into a psychedelic swirl that is a dizzying listen. Thank goodness for groups like this still existing, they feel so far and few between.

https://mediumsound.bandcamp.com/album/warmfth-2

Shop Regulars  - Self Titled

Repetition is the name of the game of this free rock/punk release, and debut LP from Portlands Shop Regulars. Knotty clangy guitar work that truly inspires air guitaring in a sweaty basement in anywhere USA. Pounding layered rhythms propel the songs forward with vocals that tie it altogether with some hooks here and there. It sounds like an SST band jamming with Television. If you dig The Dead C's lucid moments with some other Flying Nun jangle...blast this one.

https://shopregulars.bandcamp.com/album/shop-regulars-2

The Sheaves - A Salve For Institution

The Sheaves are the best punk band right now in my humble opinion. Sounding like The Clean jamming with Sonic Youth with Mark E Smith conducting this unholy bent racket. The disorienting sound evokes the burnt Phoenix desert landscapes where they reside. Guitars crawl around in the muck, rhythm section push n pulls with vocals that feel like a dood in a straight jacket mumbling to the modern hellscape that is America. It rules, it's weird and you should check it out, up the actual punx.

https://sheaves.bandcamp.com/album/a-salve-for-institution

Florian T M Zeisig  - Planet Inc

Blissed out ambient dub from dood who brought you the ambient masterpiece "Music For Parents". Shifting away from the more grounded, and naturalistic sounds of his previous record, Florian dives head first into more soupy and synthetic sounds. It's holds you a little more at a distance than MFP but it's equally as enveloping. In like with the like of Purelink, Deadbeat, more ambient side of Monolake.

https://stroomtv.bandcamp.com/album/planet-inc

Lockslip - Lockslip

Best metalcore since early 2000s. So many bands get compared to Converge, Dillinger, Coalesce, or As The Sun Sets but basically never actually sounds like those bands but rather brutish bro music with some fast parts. Lockslip is control chaos with dynamic songwriting where breakdowns are the end game but just a part of the progression of the tunes. The vocals from Sara Gregory are scorched earth throat shredding screams and growls with some Sean Ingram like back ups. The ep is a perfect taste for what a fuller project could be. It wouldn't surprise me of this band blows up. Great guitar work, use of feedback, heady drumming and punishing basstones make this one of the best debuts of the year.

https://lockslip.bandcamp.com/album/lockslip

JRCG - Grim Iconic

Justin knows how to make a groove that will get a whole room bobbing their heads. Armed with pounding drums, auxiliary percussion, synths that sound like their getting beat up. Justin seems to have thought more about how he us delivering his vocals as they are more dynamic here than they were on the first JRCG record or any of the Dreamdecay stuff. Unlike DD, guitars play a much less central roll, more of a texture and to emphasize the main thrust of the tunes. If you get the chance to see em live, the record I don't think could do justice to just how powerful they are live.

https://jrcg.bandcamp.com/album/grim-iconic-sadistic-mantra

Lynn Avery/Cole Pulice - Phantasy and Reality

Longtime collaborators Lynn Avery and Cole Pulice come through with another winner. Ambient/new age music in last couple years has felt like this low effort grift so many people have tried to insert themselves into, but what Lynn and Cole make together is the real deal. This record has a more dreamy/lush pallette than their last collab, with drifting pianos, the reverb drenched warped sax, acoustic guitars, upright bassand sound design that brings to mind the Japanese greats. It's imo their most fleshed out and dynamic worl they've made together. The cover art really evokes what the sound of this record is, pure blissful light that makes you feel like things might be ok.

https://moonglyph.bandcamp.com/album/phantasy-reality

SML - Small Medium Large

Another band that while the record is really good doesn't do justice to how powerful it is live. I saw SML in LA for the release shows and the chemistry between all the players was astonishing. They way they bounced and played off each other was something to behold. This record, which I believe is comprised of edits of a grouping of live shows. Similar to how Can edited down long jams, sessions and created a cohesive record, Small Medium Large achieves a similar feat. There's moments of body moving grooves, longing ambience and freaked out sound design. Excited to hear what they do next.

https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/small-medium-large

J Mcfarlane's Reality Guest - Whoopee

Twerps were one of the best "indie pop" bands of the mid 2010s, who's record "Range Anxiety" still holds up with fantastic tunes and guitar work. Unfortunately that band is no more BUT now we get J Mcfarlane's Reality Guest, Julia McFarlane's freak pop that was seemingly quietly released Jan 15th of 2024. The record mixes dubbed out spacey pop, bossa nova, alil kosmiche, trip hop and breakbeats to create a wildly experimental album. In my mind this sounds like a lost Too Pure Records release, sounding at points like Pram, Laika, and Moonshake but a modern take. It's a brilliant and deeply underrated record filled with so much to dig into.

https://hobbiesgalore.bandcamp.com/album/whoopee

Thirdface - Ministerial Cafeteria

Like Lockslip, Thirdface are carry the torch of 90s/early 2000s metalcore. Thirdface definitely more in the Deadguy, Rorschach, and Born Against vien, it's more punk, less technical. Live videos of this band is what won me over before I even heard their records. The drumming is killer, the way the guitarist expresses themselves on stage I found to be very real/unself conscious with vocals that shredded dd. I do find the guitar work to be some of the most interesting intersections of influences that infuse Thirdman with something basically all other hc bands lack, they are pushing at the lines that are draw. It's bizarre to me this band isn't huge, esp cuz I think they have a cross over appeal with just how cool the music is.

https://thirdface.bandcamp.com/album/ministerial-cafeteria

Mo Dotti - Opaque

I guess it's maybe a fopa to include a record I did PR for but Mo Dotti handly made the best and truest shoegaze record of 2024. Not bogged down by the last decades woe is me, slow derg "shoegaze" that has more in common with Hum, Helmet and Deftones and masculine energy or fake tiktok clout. Mo Dotti makes a record focused on tunes first, with sound design elevating already great songs. Gina's sense of melody is unmatched by any peers, singing w a haunting pop appeal that isn't boohoohoo lyrics / or singing the same bland wisphered melodies that have no sense or HOOKS. Backed by Guys tremendous guitar work that combined Johnny Marr, Kevin Shields and J Masicus. The rhythm section of Andrew and Greg keep things moving forward with punk forward beats that give everything muscle without falling into dood music. This is the only record that should be at the top of any 2024 gazers list.

Water Damage - In E

Volume, repetition, volume, repetition, volume and repetition, this is the sonic mantra of Austin, Texas's Water Damage. On their new record "In E", Water Damage continues to scorch the earth with walls of punishing sound. It's no secret that something truly special can happen to the psyche when you are being pummelled with trance inducing drones, you can transcend time, you might laugh, you might cry but hopefully you look inward, letting a calm wash over you with metric tons of distortion. Water Damage are the rare "rock" band that follow in the lineage of artists like Faust, Tony Conrad, Steve Reich and Pärson Sound, one that creates such heavy yet minimalistic audio treasures that not only hit you viscerally but also give space to contemplate on your place in the cosmos. Their longest offering yet, Water Damage hits you with 4 side long tracks of krautpunk ending with a cover of "Ladybird" by Shit & Shine featuring Craig Clouse himself on vocals. Drone until you hear god speak. (This is the bio I wrote for the record cuz WD asked me to cuz....I'm a fan very vocally)

https://waterdamage12xu.bandcamp.com/album/in-e

Knocked Loose -You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To

Hard, nasty and heavy as fuck metalcore. This is the first record I think that really captures KL disgusting sound. It's pretty knuckleheady, and luckily they are self aware from interviews. Opening moments are thrilling with throat scorching vocals ans blast beats that careen headfirst into their Neanderthal like breakdowns. The vocals remind me alot of a more in yr face snapcase. The production is dense and overwhelming. It's like Turmoil turned up to 1000. Haven't really dug into the lyrics so not sure what themes he's working with....

https://knockedloose.bandcamp.com/album/you-wont-go-before-youre-supposed-to

Smoke Bellow - Structurally Sound

Unfortunately the final album from the last decades most underrated bands. Smoke Bellow historically change their sound between every release their early out sounding more like Velvet Underground, Pram, and Roy Montgomery to more new agey kosmiche to their more recent work that evoked Young Marble Giants, Raincoats and private press post punk. This new record is the first that kinda stays in the same lane but adding some minimalist composer influence. The B Side really opens up what it could have been if they didn't break up, amazing layering and wider cornucopia of instruments. Most slept on band in last 15 years. HANDS THE FUCK DOWN

https://smokebellow.bandcamp.com/album/structurally-sound-2

Doechi - Alligator Bites Never Heal

Alot of been talked about hip-hop being "back" post Kendrick/Drake beef. The cultural realignment on the art form and not the clout chasing commercialization it's become. Doechi comes at a perfect time, with great production and lots of personality. This is an artist who truly cares about the history / art form of hip-hop with tons of different flows, voicing and amazing story telling. The songs have moments of humor/levity that collide w darker intrusive thoughts, of self worth and doubt. The production goes from jazzy boom bap, smooth 90s R&B and lil bits a trap and I'm sure some other genres I'm not nessasarily familiar with but it's a fair cohesive mix tape and an exciting new artist any hiphop fan should keep their ears on. Can't wait to hear her official debut next year.

Bowery Electric  - Demo

Bowery Electric is one of those bands that have finally been seeing some of the recognition that rightly deserve over the last few years with more and more people plundering the depths of shoegaze history. Their combo of slow churning dense layers of distortion, dubby bass lines and triphop/downtempo rhythms they created a new pathway for ShOeGaZe indebted bands. So, when they randomly dropped (heheh) this collection of demos it was a peak behind the curtain of their very realized LPs. You can hear more whats happening w the bass and guitars which is v fun to parse out the soundscapes. I wouldn't say these r better versions of the songs but are more approachable if that makes sense?

https://boweryelectricofficial.bandcamp.com/album/demo

Broadcast - "Spell Blanket" / Distant Calls

The loss of Trish has continued to be felt many years on esp for a specific music nerd section. So getting these two collections is a massive boon. One being the acoustic demos of songs we already know that show how closely all Broadcast songs are to 60s folk music. Hearing the raw versions of the lyrics / melodies over minimalist guitar work really shows when you strip away everything the songs we're amazing. The other collection is taking a dive into the work flow of Trish and James. The tunes oscillate wildly from proper tunes to little sound experiments. Getting to peak into their inner world is truly a treat that we are lucky enough James is allowing us to behold.

https://broadcast.bandcamp.com/album/distant-call-collected-demos-2000-2006

Kendrick Lamar  - GNX

Kendrick Lamar is the greatest rapper of our generation, and definitely in top 5 of all time. After many years of being put on a pedestal of being an "important" artist, Lamar finally let's loose and has some fun with this LP. Handly murdering Drake for the world to see, during a once in a lifetime cultural event (last one I felt this excitement was when MBV came out), Kendrick showed his breath of talent from conceptual song craft to a hook filled banger. GNX feels like the victory lap of a man feeling less tethered to being the savior of hiphop and closer to what he's been doing with Baby Keem while still pushing the culture. This is his best record since TPAB. Its accessible in the way Damn was, but not trying to sound like top 40 but instead what the top 40 SHOULD sound like. Mr Morale was a difficult listen, I fully appreciate what he was doing on the record, airing out everything that has haunted him as a human, and it's underrated in alot of ways. GNX is sonically feel in line with what id call "the beef" ep. Lyrically less like MMATBS or TBAP, which is fine, not even song has to be these dark, dense, dour meditations of the world / self. It's still filled w great punch lines, flexes and yes, some amazingly powerful story telling like on "Reincarnated" and "The Heart pt 6". The record also features his best R&B cuts he's ever released. It's very interesting his first post TDE release is a surprise drop that feels very planted in the NOW. The only weak song imo is the title track, which i appreciate in concepte with lifting up new artists but it just feels somewhat out place skill wise. We will see how he feels a few years from now when he releases his next "statement" record or maybe we will get a looser Kendrick from now on....it's hard to say.

Galaxie 500 - Uncollected Noise New York 88 - 90

This maybe be a blasphemous take but this is my favorite Galaxie 500 release. This shows the embryonic stage of the band. Their is more energy and sharp edges and lucidity than any of their official releases. I read in an interview they were really into the Feelies at the time of the first tape (I have the tape, no vinyl) and you can tell. The songs have a similar tension, and nervyness but with Dean's sense of melody. In a different timeline G500 were more urgent, faster and earth bound, of course they'd go in a different direction and inspired countless bands but it's rare to hear a band this raw and jangley without sounding kinda wimpy. This has muscle and melody.

https://galaxie500.bandcamp.com/album/uncollected-noise-new-york-88-90

Jessica Pratt - Here in The Pitch

Jessica Pratt finally and deservedly breaks through on her fourth long player. With each record Jessic has honed her songwriting and found her own minimalist style. Her last record "Quiet Signs" ended with "" and it showed her widening her sonic pallette, and "Here In The Pitch" she makes good on that promise. The record blows with a new set of sounds that are used tastefully and never over take the core of the songs : Voice and Guitar. This record rewards repeat listens, hooks bloom out, rhythms subtle move things and synths sparkle in the mix. It creates a beautiful, haunting and immersive listen. Jessica is someone to root for to have a larger audience and with this record she now does.

https://jessicapratt.bandcamp.com/album/here-in-the-pitch

Jpegmafia  - I Lay My Life Down For You

Peggy's best solo outing since Vetern, hands down. Doubling down on the powerful bonkers production of Scaring The Hoes. With alot of chesting pumping and self reflection, it's a record of dualing inner dialogs. The songs have some of the hardest beats that will give you stink face like on "New Black History" but also some of the smoothest like on "I'll Be Right There". Peggy also switches up his flows, experiments with his voice more than any record I can record outside some of the autotuney stuff on Cornballs or the EPs. This honestly might be my fav of his solo work.

https://jpegmafia.bandcamp.com/album/i-lay-down-my-life-for-you

Lost Paradise : blissed out breakbeat hardcore 1991-94

What an amazing comp of as the title says ; blissed out pummeling electronic music. The tracks all ebb n flow with moments of calm ambeint synth scapes/ sound design and at a moments notice a song will blast you with some of the hardest beats you hear. I stumbled upon the track "Inesse" by DJ Mayhem, my favorite track on the record. The song opens up with pure outerspace sounding atmosphere that rides on this for first 90 seconds of the sing before you hit with the beat that makes me wanna do backflips and makes me wanna run up the walls. Its a killer track that really hit me at a great time while making the Dummy record.

BCF Recommendations

Here's some recommendations for yr ear holes for this week's bandcamp Friday. First one I've done in a minute, been busy with Dummy and our upcoming EU/UK tour. Thank you to all whove listened.

Puli "Swirling"

A who's who of In Sheep Clothing universe, make up this experimental supergroup of sorts. Making dubby electronic post rock that feels somewhere between Basic Channel, Bark Pyschosis, and Steve Hiett. Groove forward that gets yr head bobbing but atmosphere that you can bathed in. The songs build with layers of vibed out soubd design, drones and immersive production. Highly recommend!

https://openspaceworld.bandcamp.com/album/os004-puli-swirling-lp

Skeet - "Simple Reality"

Early 80s obscure minimalist post punk from UK that sounds like Young Marble Giants.....well that's yes for me. Skeet has a vibe closer to Antena but without the Bossa influence and a more dub sound peaking out, esp with certain production choices. They were very short lived, only played 10 gigs. Imagine Maximum Joy but stripping it to its bare bones and you'd get Skeet. It's also released on the always reliable Efficient Space!

https://efficientspace.bandcamp.com/album/simple-reality

Closedown - "Dissolve"

Now, this is what I called a lost gem, LA's Closedown recently reissued mateial is ripe for discovery. Mixing sampling, FX and noise to make a possible lost classic. It's kinda of the perfect middle ground between Souvlaki and Pygmalion, hints of dub, post rock and idm in the mix. "Red Oval" is the real gem, a perfect mix of Seefeel electronics and Bowery Electric space rock. If yr sick of all the over hyped, over spoken about dream gaze pop whatever, here's something new to sink yr teeth into. Be stoned while listening lol.

https://closedown-official.bandcamp.com/album/dissolve

Tile - "Warmfth"

Medium Sound is always releasing gems through the year, and this is no different. Tile makes what I would call ambient pop. Drifting Windy and Carl type drones, with some trip hop, sound collage and new age all wrapped up into this expansive cassette that will leave you floored. It's like if Bowery Electric just made 10 min long ambient pieces with a lucid song popping out at you for a couple minutes and dips back into the cosmos. This rules yall.

https://mediumsound.bandcamp.com/album/warmfth-2

Shop Regulars - "Shop Regulars"

This is definitely in my top 5 of the year from these Portland punx. Sounding like a warped version of Television jamming with Can with hints of Flying Nuns ramshackled pop. It's all about locking into a groove, submitting yourself to it and reaching for rock n roll bliss. Repetition is the mode of operation, which as readers may know, is my shit. The guitar work is so free, the rhythm section pounding/ layered and the hooks subtle but impactful. Get into this masterful clanging.

https://shopregulars.bandcamp.com/album/shop-regulars-2

Mo Dotti - "Opaque"

Best shoegaze record of the year, any other answer is wrong. SORRY.

https://mo-dotti.bandcamp.com/album/opaque

Smoke Bellow - "Structurally Sound"

The world is an unjust place, and will likely never be just, and one small reason is that Smoke Bellow will never get the recognition they deserve as one of the best bands of the last decade. This record is their final release, I'm sure they will all go and make new music, and I'm stoked to hear what they do. This record out soon on Moon Glyph continues the sound of their last record with some new ideas peaking though, esp toward the 2nd half of the record where a more minimalist composer influence shines through. I cannot recommend this bands whole discography and it's personally heartbreaking they are done becuz they are a huge influence on Dummy.

https://smokebellow.bandcamp.com/album/structurally-sound-2

J. Mcfarlane's Reality Guest - "Whoopee"

Twerps were a rare "indie pop" band I liked, great guitar work and melodies. That band is done, but we gain JMFRG, who makes woozy dubbed out Broadcastian ambient pop. This definitely is some dreamy surreal phreak shit that has 90s breaks, tripped out production and melodies that are sticky as hell.

Best of 2024 so far...

We are half way through 2024, we love a list of music that is good. Dummy will have a record out in the fall, so that will probably end up on yr year end ;) but in no particular order here we go.

Water Damage  - In E

Current rulers of minimalist crushing rock music. I love that a band is making drone music that feels purpolsive and muscular without being overly masculine. All the sounds play in (dis)harmony that creates washes of pounding frequencies that are part alienating and part welcoming. It's never feels stuffy/ over intellectual like so much avant music can. If Neu was the sound of flowing water, than W D is the sound of flowing lava. Love this band, and these 4 tunes.

https://waterdamage12xu.bandcamp.com/album/in-e

Broadcast - Distant Calls / Spell Blanket

Any new music from Broadcast is clearly a gift, and I do wish James had it in him to finish whatever that supposed record they were working on but here we have 2 documents of the duos genius to unpack. Distant Calls is really an interesting listen becuz of how many classic tunes just start off with simple chords and melodies, that evolve into completely different sonic backdrops. Endlessly fascinating stuff. Spell Blanket is definitely a mixed bag of almost fleshed out or fleshed out tunes with some more tossed off ideas. I wish they would have kinda mixed the 2 releases together in a cohesive release (like I do on my ipod) but there's alot to love and it plays more like a stretched out " mother is the milky way "which I loved. Obviously we r lucky too have these documents and I hope James gained some peace from releasing.

https://broadcast.bandcamp.com/album/spell-blanket-collected-demos-2006-2009

Florian T M Zeisig - Planet Inc

Swirling dub techno from Florian T M Zeisig. Best known for their "Music For Parents" an equally great droney ambient record that introduced me to Florian. This record feels alpt more modern comparatively, alil cooler soundind, not as warm. Alot of dub techno can sound pretty samey but this record is fairly dynamic between more ambeint stuff and stuff with more of a beat/groove to latch into. Been listening to this a ton in the car. I think its one of the best of the year so far.

https://stroomtv.bandcamp.com/album/planet-inc

Lockslip - S/T

Brutal metalcore that is, I think, one of the best examples of the genre in YEARS. Sounding like Curl Up and Die, early Converge and A Life Once Lost, and Eyes Upon Separation swirled into a raw punchy and fun EP. Sara's vocals are on some other level of rage and passion, you instantly believe her anger. Dont sleep on this up and coming band. Lockslip has alot of potential, I hope they add some Isis / Neurosis clean vocals to the mix, and get into bands like Ire, Breach and Knut along the way.

https://lockslip.bandcamp.com/album/lockslip

Mountain Movers  - Walking After Dark

TiM every year has that ONE release that just knocks me over, and this year it's MM new record. With each release MM seem to push their sound to new highs and new experimentation. Some tunes sound like VU/Yo La Tengo songs stretched out to Popol Vuh lengths, so much space to bring you in on their wavelength. Along with some that seem like lil tangential experiments in the practice spaces. It all works together in a harmonic atmosphere that feels like their own. Fans of Magnog, Bardo Pond, Headroom or Cosmic Jokers.

https://themountainmovers.bandcamp.com/album/walking-after-dark

Jessica Pratt - Here's The Pitch

Jessica Pratt is a national treasure at this point. She smokes allllllllllllllll current singer songwriters. Her lyrics, her production and melodies all feel singular. I had heard her new record was adding drums and tbh I was worried (shouldn't have been) cuz often when folk artists add more instruments it ends up losing something but Jessica understands is nuance, and uses these newish elements to elevate already amazing songs. Melding bossa nova, ambient, 70s psych folk, 60s Phil Spector pop and honestly Cocteau Twins. I love her. We are lucky to have her right now

https://jessicapratt.bandcamp.com/album/here-in-the-pitch

Pot Pot - Going Insane

Like favs Lewsburg, Pot Pot worships at the alter of the Velvet Underground while folding in other elements that elevate it to some new and cool. Pot Pot hails from Ireland, I found out about them when my bud Mariana was writing about music from there. This new mini LP(?) has elements of Spectrum, Faust, Tony Conrad, Spacemen 3 and Labradford. Pounding drone rock that feels extremely urgent in 2024.

Winged Wheel - Big Hotel

The 2nd 12xu release on this list is the avant diy rock super group Winged Wheels sophomore LP. This record is more far out, alive yet still retains a aura of mystery. This sounds like classic Kranky type stuff, washes of droned out guitars, subtle vocals and forward moving kosmiche. Imagine if Wendy and Carl made a full on rock band or if Helen wasn't focused on pop tunes. It rules.

https://wingedwheel.bandcamp.com/album/big-hotel

Twin Coast - noie! noie! noie!

Twin Coast are one the best noise pop, gazey noise rock band. Chicago produces so so so many good young songwriter, sound designers, noise makers and this is no secret. This ep furthers them into the realm of pure caustic noise with sweet melodies. Think alil more lucid Astrobrite or a more coherent Swirlies. Love this band. Dont sleep all you indie pop nerds.

https://twincoast.bandcamp.com/album/noie-noie-noie-3

Geo - Out Of Body

This is a great band, true freaks making ass shaking dance punk that mixes the sounds Liquid Liquid and Crash Course in Science while still understand space within the sonic field. The lyrics are surreal, creating a paranoid world of Out OF Body. The guitar are dissonant and stabby, beats are layered, bass lays a sixk groove and everything works in harmony to make one of the most exciting debuts of the year.

https://erstetheketontraeger.bandcamp.com/album/ett-113-geo-out-of-body-lp

Cats Miaow - Skipping Stone : The Cassette Years

Just a great collection of lofi jangle indie pop from their cassette years, following up last year's amazing other collection.

https://thecatsmiaow.bandcamp.com/album/skipping-stones-the-cassette-years-92-93

GMO - Repeat/Rewind

One of my favorite new bands in LA, who make the ideal middle ground between Broadcast and Aphex Twin. "Tap" is the real charmer cuz it reminds me of the minimalism of Tender Buttoms with that slight crispy tones on the synthns and driving beats. Other songs feel more for the dance floor. I'm hyped to see where this band goes next, leaning on which direction?

https://gmogmo.bandcamp.com/album/repeat-rewind-3

Lost Paradise: Blissed Out Breakbeat Hardcore 1991-94

Insane collection of ambient meets pounding breakbeats. The banger on this record is "Inesse" by DJ Mayhem, goddamn WHAT A FUCKING TRACK. Slow build of beautiful new agey textures and than the beat blasts in and ot makes you wanna lose yr mind.

Bandcamp Friday # ?!?!?

Music is good

Water Damage - In E

I love this band, and ive made it clear so much that Water Damage asked me to write the blurb for this LP. 4 side long drone rock bangers that would make Tony Conrad and Faust proud. Theres no bands out there right that put me into am altered state of bliss. I hope Dummy can play with them in the future.

https://waterdamage12xu.bandcamp.com/album/in-e

Lockslip  - S/T EP

Brutal metalcore that i think it is one of the best examples of the genre in YEARS. Sounding like Curl Up and Die, Coalesce and Ire swirled into a raw punchy and fun EP. Sara's vocals are on some other level of rage and passion, you instantly believe her anger. Dont sleep on this up and coming band. Banging yr fucking head and smile.

https://lockslip.bandcamp.com/album/lockslip

Darrell DeVore - Another Song of Civilization

Goaty isnt a prolific label but when they drop its always fire. This is the 2nd Darrell DeVore archive release. Beautiful, far out new age, jazz and field recordings. It feels like such a crazy journey of sounds and moods. Similar too Iasos and Pauline Anna Strome.

https://goatytapes.bandcamp.com/album/another-song-of-civilization

Heavenly Bodies  - Obscure Sad Terrible

Like Water Damage, Heavenly Bodies makes droned out rock but feels more from outer space than the dirt in Texas. Waves of feedback and guitars that remind me Wendy and Carl or a less pysch Bardo Pond. All their tapes rule. Get it

https://heavenlybodiesphl.bandcamp.com/album/obscure-sad-terrible

Minus - Jesus Christ Bobby

Underrated/bonkers metalcore that somehow came out on Victory Records. This Icelandic band sounded kinda like the middle ground between Deadguy and Deftones. The melodic element's are so bizarre and the caustic riffs/tones just pound yr brain into the ground. I genuinely think it sucks this band didnt pop off but the genre in 2002 was oversaturated. I think anyone looking for really raw, nasty mathcore / noisecore will reallllllllly dig

https://victoryrecords.bandcamp.com/album/jesus-christ-bobby

Mark Glynne & Bart Zwier - Home Comfort

I loved these kinda crate digging home recording experimental rock reissues, so often they are subtlety mind blowing. "Home Comfort" sounds like Syd Barret jamming with Faust.

https://markglynnebartzwier.bandcamp.com/album/home-comfort

Nest - Retold

This is oddly one of the first ambient/modern composer records i ever heard. I found it on a blog where I also found Grouper, Jefre Cantu Ledsema, Black To Comm, just the whole Type Records roster. This record was the soundtrack of many bedtime tour music in the earphones. It combines haunting piano, japanese ambient synths and immerse field recordings. This didnt leave my ipod for literal YEARS. Its sooooooooooooooo good.

https://nneesstt.bandcamp.com/album/retold-2014-special-edition

Twin Coast - noie! noie! noie!

Twin Coast are one the best noise pop, gazey noise rock band. Chicago produces so so so many good young songwriter, sound designers, noise makers and this is no secret. This ep furthers them into the realm of pure caustic noise with sweet melodies. Think alil more lucid Astrobrite or a more coherent Swirlies. Love this band. Dont sleep all you indie pop nerds

February BCF recommendations

Hi, first bandcamp Friday of the year! Im busy as hell recording LP2 so this will be quick!

Medicine  - Silences

I guess its maybe pressing the finger on the scale cuz im doing PR for the groups upcoming record. But, who cares, Medicine is a seminal "shoegaze" band from the 90s if you didnt know. Their first 2 LP's are classic, and the Captured Tracks era releases predated the current trend of guitar bands(Spirit of The...., Feeble Lil Horse and Palm) making kinda fragmented songs that change on dime, that go from blown out distortion to synths sounding like their are falling apart to pysch pop hooks. Silences came out last year and is BONKERS. Its a record that's meant to be digested over lots of listens understand the subtle and not subtle shifts in the progression of the tunes, the hooks pop out  with the coed vocal melodies. The production is is killer with those classic deep fried mutant guitar tones, the inspired drumming and Brad's sense of Beatlesish melody. Don't sleep on this band obviously pbut esp this record, one of the best independent rock records youll hear in a minute. If you don't believe me go listen to "Hey Hey Go Away" and report back.

https://bradlaner.bandcamp.com/album/silences

Bruiser Wolf - Dope Game Stupid

Insane, hilarious and fantasticly produced hiphop record by a singular voice. Danny Brown's bruiser brigade can be hit or miss but BW makes some of the most fascinating storytelling youll hear.

https://bruiserbrigaderecords.bandcamp.com/album/dope-game-stupid

Heavenly Bodies  - Medium

Recommended to me by Bill of TiM fame. HB play droned out spacey rock in the vein of early Bowerly Electric, Magnog or any 90s Kranky stuff. Great music to hike or take a long walk too. Ive been listening to this a ton when im reading by Lovecraften horror books lol

https://heavenlybodiesphl.bandcamp.com/album/medium

Dregs - Dregs

Downtempo, triphopy murk thats the vybe of Dregs, its kinda like a more lowkey Moonshake or darker Laika. Too Pure and Kranky lovers rise up. Cool coed vocals, atmospheric production, if i knew about this when i was making my top releases of the year, this definitely would have been on it.

https://dreggin.bandcamp.com/album/dregs

Dorothy Moskowitz - Rising to Eternity

Did you know the singer of The United States Of America put out solo record recently?!?!?! Well, she did and this new one right here is dope. Sounding like a continuation an expansion of what she was doing with w TUSOA. Each track seems like its own little world, mom8ent and feel. It goes from pysch folk to ambient to noise. Its a really cool fucking record, and if you dig her previous band, Broadcast (duh), Dorthy Carter and Linda Perhacs youll be hyped on this.

Best of 2023!

Welcome to my year end list. This has been a banner year for Hiphop, droned out guitar rock and triphop influenced stuff. Below is my favorite LPs, EPs, singles and reissues! Hope you discover something you dig and inspires you. This also doubles as a bandcamp recommendation for this weeks BCF. See you in 2024

LP's :

Danny Brown X Jpegmafia - Scaring The Hoes

This might be my album of the year. Bonkers production that goes from bombastic glitchy beat switches to totally blissed out euphoric melodic alls of sound. Danny and Peggy trade verses, both bringing different flows, often with hilarious ywt thoughtful bars through out the whole LP. I havent liked a hiphop record this much since Loojis album from a couple years go. This is just such a fun, twisted, avant rap record that sees two of the best making banger after banger.

https://jpegmafia.bandcamp.com/album/scaring-the-hoes

Icecoldbishop - Generational Curse

A harrowing hiphop record that I feel like I am not the right person to talk about, but i do love it and its story telling. Like Danny Brown and Kendrick ICB has a very flamboyant and expressive vocal delivery. The beats mix g funk, trap, boombap and psychedelic hiphop into a brutal yet hooky debut. The strain in ICB voice whens he trying to squeeze out his bars cuz its just a pure release of his inner monolog. This isnt fake at all, its so real. Like Biggies debut. (Not on bandcamp)

A.S.O. - Self Titled

This whole record rules. Its a surprisingly dynamic record unlike...alot of records ingeneral. Taking elements of triphop, house, 90s r&b, dream pop and Sophisti-pop into their sticky melodies and interesting production choices. The crown jewel of the record is "True", its one of the more emotionally resonate songs I've heard in a minute, and the vocals reallllly soar with that Beth Gibbons vibrato, along with "Hunter" kinda vibe. The songs are hella catchy, it doesnt over stay its welcome, its fun.....This record will likely be in my top 5 of the year. It's rare that I feel cooler when listening to music but this makes me feel cool lol. Also, love the subtle nodes to soul there are.

Water Damage - 2 Songs

If it's not obvious from my Twitter or IG, but Water Damage has become one of my favorite current bands. Droned out minimalist rock music that is just so soothing but I don't think for most, this will be the case lol. First track is similar to what they were doing on last year's "Repeater" buuuut their are strange wild edits(?) Or pauses jump out that really gives this track an off kilter vibe. Theres another lil thing is that there are these random snare hits with reverb that make it sound HARD. The B-side pushed their sound into a interesting direction with the vibraphone or xylophone, with Steve Reich like repetition and just grows from there, it's quite mesmerizing. MAN, this shit just hits, obvi if you dig Tony Conrad, Faust, Bardo Pond or Jessamine....you'll love.

https://waterdamage12xu.bandcamp.com/album/2-songs

Yo La Tengo - This Stupid World

Truly absurd a band 30 years into their career can make such a adventurous piece of work thay doesnt betray their sound. Next to Low, YLT might be the only other 90s indie band that still pushes forward. Tracks range from Tony Conrad drone feedback minimalism, noise pop, idm, folk, free rock and NZ pop. Each song is its own lil world but all work in congress to make a haunting, modern and cohesive listen that shows age doesnt matter if yr a real one.

https://yolatengo.bandcamp.com/album/this-stupid-world

Lewsberg - Out and About

Much has been said about Lewsberg mellowing out, but with this mellowing they actually sound less like VU. On their new LP they fold in new sounds, moods and colors. Expanding the vocals adds new textures to their minimalist but lovely songs. Feeling closer to post crazy rhythm era Feelies, Yo La Tengo at their most sweet and even alil Belle and Sebastian. Its beautiful music made by freaks. The only "issue" is i wish lead guitarist went off leash alil. But regardless this record rules.

https://lewsberg12xu.bandcamp.com/album/out-and-about

XV - On The Creekbeds On The Thrones

Great Detroit weirdo rock, from members of Shells, Deadbeat Beat and Tyvek. Idk how to properly describe this record, it's kinda raw, it's kinda psychedelic, alil dub and alil avant. Too my dum dum ears it's a mix between Raincoats, Red Krayola and Movietone 🤷. It's really cool, and I feel cool listening too it. Disorienting production, detached vocals at times but then there is a playfulness too....very distinctive band. "Fresh Lettuce" is so odd, otherworldly. If you dig Mope Grooves, Maximum Joy and freak flags flying.

https://thexv.bandcamp.com/album/on-the-creekbeds-on-the-thrones

IE - Junkbody

Their last record was on a toneburst favorite label Moon Glyph . This continues their meditative brand of kosmiche. If you can imagine it, it's like if Faust made a minimalist ambient record inside of the punishing drone feedback jams. The vocals pop in sometimes to add an even more haunting hypnosis. The amount of space they use to create such trance inducing worlds of sound. Highly recommend esp if you dig early Smoke Below or VU at their mellowest. The song "Mels Hole" is top 5 songs of the year, drone pop by way of Shangri-las. Perfect tune.

https://iesounds.bandcamp.com/album/junk-body

Water From Your Eyes - Everybodys Crushed

Nothing makes me happier than seeing a couple freaks crystallize their sound into a cohesive piece of work that marries pop and avant-garde. These songs twist n turn from pop bangers to noise rock freak outs that never hold yr hand. Its as if Cornelius didnt drift into more ambient direction and just kept going harder into the noise pop he explored earlier in his output. Very excited to see where they go next cuz this shows so much promise ontop of being so realized. Rachel's vocals are at times crushingly beautiful & emotive and sometimes flip to a deadpan distance. Nates guitars are jagged and punishing. Hopefully more labels will take chances of more left of center indie music based off this.

https://waterfromyoureyes.bandcamp.com/album/everyones-crushed

Omni Gardens - Golden Pear

Im a huge fan of Steve and his label Moon Glyph by evidence of how often the label shows up here on the blog. He returns with his solo work under Omni Gardens which continues to explore beauty and inner peace. This record feels like floating on a river of bliss at the golden hour while yr on a mild shroom trip. Purely immersing you in the drifting synth arpeggios and low frequency drones. I love how this music makes me feel.

https://omnigardens.bandcamp.com/album/golden-pear

Billy Woods and Kenny Segal - Maps

Imo Billys best LP yet, flows, word play and just the pure sniper focus of his bars are awe inspiring. The production compliments the vibe of each song perfectly. It goes from boom bap jazz infused beats to more far out abstract psychedelic beats that circle dark ambience. Billys words often dense, hilarious and profound all in one tune. Theres so many funny one liners that make me run the track back like from opening track, a line i deeply relate to "Every time things going good or having a laugh, Have to remember God's a hater". The guest verses are all uniformly dope but have to say Danny Browns is a real stand out with how patient and calm his delivery is, he knows how to weave words and cadence w pure mastery.

https://billywoods.bandcamp.com/album/maps

Weak Signal - War and War

So if i had to give a neanderthal elevator pitch to describe WS sound it would be what if The Melvins and The Vaselines were jamming in a very well dark smoke filled room. That maybe be silly but thats how it unfolds to me. Effortless songs, dense guitars, drums and bass pound with lovely coed vocal melodies that hook ya in. "Consolation" is song of the fall. Stoned pop at its best. Is 12xu best undergroundrocklabel right now?(Aware it was out digitally in 2022, but idc, 12xu released vinyl in June).

https://weareweaksignal.bandcamp.com/album/war-war

Hysterical Love Project  - Lashes

I really enjoy listening to this record late at night while very stoned. Its what in the old days you'd call it a grower. They blend Love Spirals Downward, Sneaker Pimps, Bowery Electric, and Aphex Twin into a LP of subtle dreamy pop tunes. The production is soooooooo good, feels studied but not overly referential. I could imagine HLP playing The Bronze during a forlorned moment between Angel & Buffy. Its sick.

https://motionward.bandcamp.com/album/hysterical-love-project-lashes

Daisies - Great Big Open Sky

Daisies are the most underrated pop group in the US. Val's voice and storytelling are so welcoming and empathetic with hooks galore. Pair that with Chris's production and guitar playing.....hes a lowkey genius. This is a more contemplative release for the group that brings their 90s dance pop / adult contemporary influences more upfront than the more indie pop early LPs. Its no secret i love this band and if the world was just theyd be huge. THIS IS POP MUSIC LOSERS.

https://daisies.bandcamp.com/album/great-big-open-sky

EP'S :

Forever ☆ - 3 Series

Easily the most impressive and exciting shoegaze coming out right now despite what big indie will tell you. Breakbeats, blown out guitars and haunting vocals. MORE OF THIS PLEASE. Its like Curve on speed.

https://foreverstar.bandcamp.com/album/3-series

Tara Clerkin Trio - On The Turning Ground

Bristol just knows whats up. This fantastic ep that melds jazz, triphop, ambient, drone, field recordings, modern classical into a dreamy swirl. They feel like they are picking up where Broadcast left off with Noise Made By People with the soft, layered and production forward pop that isnt holding yr hand. The vocals r so transportative, with the loops and melodies. I just love this ep. WORLD OF ECHO STRIKES AGAIN.

https://taraclerkintrio.bandcamp.com/album/on-the-turning-ground

Pablo Volt Y JGG - Mordida

Gorgeous exotica. Immersive rhythms and fantastic production. Flawless ep

https://edicionespopulares.bandcamp.com/album/mordida

Present Electric - Self Titled

I am such a huge fan of Paisley Undergrounds founder Kevin Linns P E. This new mini album/ep continues to tread in weirdo post VU jammers and janky post punk nuggets. The record is Bursting with cool ideas, experiments and tunes. If you dig Lewsberg, Drinks and The Sheaves you'll love this.

https://paisleyshirtrecords.bandcamp.com/album/present-electric

pot-pot "Ode To A"

Hitting a similar vibe to Water Damage, Irelands pot-pot play zoned out drone rock that pulses like yr digging through miles of dirt trying to get to the hallow earth to see some primordial monsters dook it out. They also have a new song out that kicks ass that sounds like "waiting for my man" but harder.

https://potpot.bandcamp.com/album/ode-to-a

Purelink - To / Deep

Chicagos Purelink are the current dub techno ambeint kings and this EP is sonic perfection. Just listen to "Maintain the Bliss".....ok yr back? Was i wrong? Ok, now go buy it and read a book.

https://purelink.bandcamp.com/album/to-deep

Reissues :

Hydroplane - Selected Songs 1997 to 2003

Hydroplane has been probs my favorite discoveries since finding Pram like 6 years ago. Like Pram, Hydroplane makes pop music but of the avant variety. Mixing indie pop, triphop, ambient, electronic dance, and shoegaze but with odd production. The songs can be catchy, or maximum droned out. They use effects and synths in subtlety adventurous ways, more studio as an instrument. This is a comp of tracks across thier whole discograpy with couple new tracks through on. Its just very idiocratic pop music which is very much my shit

https://hydroplaneband.bandcamp.com/album/selected-songs-1997-2003

The Woods - So Long Before Now

My ideal jangle pop. Sounding like Twice As Much meets Feelies meets Rain Parade but rougher around the edges. I cannot Recommend this enough

https://woodsmodernharmonic.bandcamp.com/album/so-long-before-now

Don Cherry / Jean Shcwarz - Roundtrip (1977)

Extremely far out free jazz /electronic fusion from the master Don Cherry. Some of the most propulsive/explosive jazz ive ever heard. The grooves are odd, psychedelic and at times punishing. The electronics can be spacey but also abrasive in the best way. I cannot Recommend this one enough, just so emmersive and confounding.

https://transversales.bandcamp.com/album/roundtrip-1977

Richter Band  - Smetana

This haunting collection of Popol Vuh inspired quiet music that has been reissue from this i think mostly unknown group from 1990 according to discogs. Combining kalimba, synths and guitar to create this beautiful alien sounds that use human hands to make. Its easy to get lost in this world they created, there is just something so genuinely special about these little discoveries labels make and we are so lucky to hear they gorgeous home spun sounds of 3 people playing together in such a harmonious way.

https://infiniteexpanse.bandcamp.com/album/smetana

Blue Smiley - Return

Thank the heavens this got reissued becuz its easily one of the most important shoegaze releases since the OG's. The profound influence on diy music of the noisey guitar variety. Every song kicks ass, emotionally satisfying and production is perfectly on point. Just stfu and listen to the best shoegaze record since Loveless.

https://bluesmiley.bandcamp.com/album/return

Dorothy Carter  - Wailee Wailee

Cosmic folk at its finest, this reissue is a treasured discovery in 2024. Haunting combo of Celtic, Appalachian folk with new age / avant-garde drone mixed together. Its like Malvina Reynolds jamming with Laraaji. Its just truly other worldly.

https://paltoflats.bandcamp.com/album/waillee-waillee-2

Singles :

Newjeans "Super Shy"

Best pop song of the year hands down.

Fievel is Glauque "Dark Dancing"

Fievel continue to hone and experiment, this song is a banger with new lil production trix.

Hoodie x james k "Scorpio"

Zoned out triphop ala Bowery Electric mixed with Cocteaus

Twin Coasts " Scatch on You"

This Chicago band is showing great promose with 2 killer singles this year that blend bent noise pop and drone ambient peices like Loveliescrushing

Mo Dotti  - For Anyone and You

Obviously I am biased but Mo Dotti is the best traditionally leaning shoegaze band right. Hands down understand song first, sound design second which tbh is how it should always be. This new single will be on their debut LP i believe and its a catchy pummel pop number with Ginas beautiful voice, Guys swirling guitars and Andrew (drummerl does a great job on production on both tunes. B side is more of a mood peice thats kinda like Jefre Cantu Ledsema meets Beach House.

Cole Pulice  - If I Don’t See You in the Future, I’ll See You in the Pasture

22 minute single from Toneburst/Dummy homie collaborator Cole Pulice whos music means alot to all of us. This long form tune is a caccoon droning saxophones or synths or both that have a somber tone though out its runtime. Cole bends their sax into different forms and sounds that are so beautifully alien. Get it

Sept 1 BCF recommendations

Quick and dirty BCF recs for yr cute ears

Twin Coasts - Single & Self Titled EP

Young Chicago band that makes great noisy pop tunes with some ambient/ drone mixed in. Fuck these phreaks for being so good at such a young age. I'm blown away by the songwriting on "Scratch On You". If you dig the gazey side of Dummy or Astrobrite you will love this.

https://twincoast.bandcamp.com

Forever ☆ - 3 Series

Another young/new shoegaze band that is doing very interesting stuff with blown out guitars, frantic electronic beats and haunting melodies. This 3 song tape is a must buy esp if you dig Curve, Guitar and Garbage at their more noisy

https://foreverstar.bandcamp.com/album/3-series

Greg Foat &  Gigi Mason - Dolphin

Stunningly gorgeous album, the opening track "Lee" is worth the price alone. Gigi Mason of Gaussian Curve fame join Greg Foat for a collection of kosmiche, jazz, new age and ambient fusion. It's achely beautiful smooth music that is perfect for laying down, stoned in bed shutting out the horrible ass world

https://gregfoat.bandcamp.com/album/dolphin

Fantastic Palace - Ringlets and Gaskets

Homespun psychedelic patch work collection that has an extremely weird sense of production (meaning following zero rules). Loving how odd this massive releases it, it's like 60s pysch guitar work stripped down to its barest bones. It's reminiscent of R Stevie Moore, Woo, the most far out parts of elepahnt 6and idk 2000s outsider tape artists. It's really cool.

https://fantasticpalace.bandcamp.com/album/ringlets-gaskets-the-catskills-tape-expanded-edition

Sprain - The Lamb As Effigy

Sprain is one of the best live bands in the world right now, I'm not being hyperbolic cuz I hate everything. One they do here is far more ambitious than most bands ever do across a whole career. This isn't "easy" music, but it is beautiful, has integrity and pure catharsis. It'd heavy, it's dramatic, has subtle hooks and blasts yr ears and soul. This has so much care, spirrit and effort......Anyone who digs Swans, Black Midi, This Heat or Faust.

https://sprain.bandcamp.com/album/the-lamb-as-effigy

Best of 2024

Welcome to my EOTY list, I hope you find something to sink yr teeth into or something maybe you hadn't heard or something you've see...
