Bandcamp Recs # ∞

Hi, we will in hell, but here's some music

Barnard's Star - Barnard's Star

So, this gem came my way from looking for more bands that combine noise and dance music. This record came out in 1999, in New Zealand, but was recently reissued and uploaded on bandcamp. The first song "Solarride" is a 10 minute slow evolving but trance inducing combo of Seefeels tension building beats and pure MBV noise. Its throbbing pulse, the bending guitars evoke a crusty DIY underground club, cranking the volume to ear bleeding levels. Its so hypnotic, I feel like im being pulled into a black-hole and spiralling towards the void. If you dig Seefeel, Accelera Deck, Amp and Third Eye Foundation.

Moist Crevice - Psychic Violence

You dont see bands often compared to early Sonic Youth these days, and if you do, more often than not, it doesn't really embody the power of that band. Enter UK's Moist Crevice, who sound like unhinged punks attacking their guitars, mixing noise muscle with some slightly gothic punk. The 2nd track "Psychic Violence"punches you right in the guts. It feels like its about to fall apart at any moment, like Barnards Star, it feels like this band is playing from a sweat encrusted DIY basement show space. Its a more in your face Pleasure Leftist, a more raw & tense Siouxsie And The Banshees or just a dope 4 song demo from a new cool punk band.

Scala - Compass Heart

One of my most treasured discoveries over last year has been the band Scala, they have inspired so much of my  recent creativity and excitement about music. They consist of 3/4's of Seefeel, along with Mark Van Hoen (aka Locust) and make a kinda of IDM infused dream pop but with harder beats. The way they process guitars and percussion is awe inspiring, so creative with its use of effects, sampling, chopping things up in rhythmic ways. I dont know if they ever played live but id assume it would have been extremely difficult. Ive really internalized the rock band making electronic music but not just becoming a solely electronic, it still feels grounded somehow. They use Cocteau Twins and Broadcast sample in some songs. The tune "Fuser" was on a comp from Efficient Space last year. I really think this is a band ripe for discovery, this record, along with their first "Beauty Nowhere" are imo basically perfect all the way though.

Klein - Thirteen Sense

Clearly there is somewhat of a theme with all these, which is combining the noise of shoegaze and the beats of dance/idm. The promise of shoegaze being a forward thinking form of guitar music, pushing what a rock band can do. I think a lot of bands that get tagged as forward thinking end of being slowcore with some stock synth pad sounds on top, or not really folding the influences in a novel/cohesive way. Now, this does, makes it hypnotic and alarmingly loud. The auto-tune vocals in the first song aren't my vibe, but beyond that every track is really cool, weird and truly pushing the combo. Guitars being puyshed beyond what souunds normal. Thats what imo, shoegaze is about, processing guitars to sound otherworldly, psychedelic and just crazy. Not music for bro's to bounce up n down too. Dummy tried to do this some on Free Energy, and we will continue to explore that, so hearing this is very inspiring.

 Spoonfed Hybrid - Spoonfed Hybrid

Pale Saints were never my bag, no shade, it just didn't have the ooophm i wanted. But, this is band formed by ex PS Ian Masters really pushes guitar music, and how its produced into a interesting direction. The opening song has the guitar panning around in this really cool rhythmic way that has a dizzying to listen to. The whole record is teeming with cool ideas, beautiful melodies and interesting textures. The 2nd song also feels like a forward thinking idea of what folk could have evolved into. The whole record has that creative energy Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis and simmer bands had. Idk, this shit just rules

Sun Swept -  Germinations

Lastly, it wouldn't be a recommendation list without some new age/ambient adjacent stuff, and that rec is Sun Swepts album "Germination". Beautiful flute based tracks that float and drone. The songs feel like snowflakes drifting down from the Rockies, kissing the concrete and melting away into the earth. the maybe obvious comparison is Joanna Brouk, but i hear Pauline Anna Strom, Alice Damon and Steve Hillage. We are playing with Sun Swept in Denver, really hyped

Good Flying Bird - talulah's tape

This great cassette has had some hype in certain punk indie diy circles. Indie pop has been pretty stagnate for a while but bands like GFB, Soup Activists and Silicone Prairie give me hope that it doesn't have to be the pastiche boring jangle that has no oooomph. This has more in common with the Flying Nun ramshackle punkness those bands had. Who wants to hear another wimpy cutesy Sarah Records copy thats cosplaying that are from the UK. Give me some midwest jangle, that has spirit, and passion. It feels carefree and fun. more of this Feelies, Lightheaded, Mccarthy stuff
